Hoffman rolls to big win at Deutsche Bank

09/06/2010 - Norton, MA (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Charley Hoffman fired a nine-under 62 Monday to roll to a five-stroke win at the Deutsche Bank Championship.
Hoffman, wearing his Celtic green, missed the course record at the TPC Boston by a single stroke, but did match the tournament's scoring record of 22-under- par 262.
The victory was Hoffman's second on the PGA Tour. He also won the 2007 Bob Hope Chrysler Classic.
Geoff Ogilvy closed with a five-under 66 to end in a share of second place at 17-under-par 267. He was joined there by Luke Donald (69) and third-round leader Jason Day, who managed an even-par 71 in the final round.
Tiger Woods closed with a three-under 68 to finish tied for 11th at 10-under- par 274.
Phil Mickelson again could have passed Woods at the top of the world rankings, but struggled badly on the back nine. Mickelson shot five-over 76 to slide into a share of 25th at minus-seven.
Woods was even-par for his round through 14 holes, with just one birdie and one bogey. He caught fire down the stretch though. Woods birdied three of the last four holes to post three-under 68.
For Woods, it marked the first time he had three straight rounds in the 60s since the 2009 Tour Championship.
However, he finished outside the top-10 for the sixth straight event. That marks the first time that has ever happened in his PGA Tour career. He had finished outside the top-10 seven times in eight starts in 2001, but the one time in the top-10 was a victory at the WGC-NEC Invitational.
Mickelson needed a top-four finish to pass Woods atop the world rankings, but had a birdie, two bogeys, a double-bogey and a triple-bogey on the back nine en route to his 76. That dropped him 14 spots behind Woods on the leaderboard.

Kansas City, MO - Kansas City has not officially named Matt Cassel its starting quarterback, but there can be no doubt now.

After praising his leadership and work ethic through spring workouts, the Chiefs announced Tuesday they had signed the 27-year-old Cassel to a multiyear contract. Terms were not disclosed, but he will almost certainly be one of the highest-paid members of the team.
"We are excited to be able to reach a long-term agreement for Matt Cassel to be a Kansas City Chief for many years to come," owner and board chairman Clark Hunt said in a statement. "His proven leadership on and off the field will be a tremendous asset to the organization."
Patriots made him their franchise player, meaning his salary for this season will be about $15 million.
New head coach Todd Haley, taking over for Herm Edwards after a 2-14 season, refused to name a starter at any position during offseason workouts. But it was obvious to everyone the team belonged to Cassel.
"I go out there each and every day with that focus that I'm the starter," Cassel said during a June minicamp. "Competition brings out the best in everybody."
The signing will come as welcome news to Cassel's new coaches and teammates. Amiable and hardworking, online football betting he appeared to win over everyone at minicamp.
"I think he's got some unique leadership qualities. I think his teammates like him and have respect for him. I think he's doing a pretty good job on the field, too," Haley said last month. After one workout, wide receiver Devard Darling declared Cassel "a breath of fresh air."

Chiefs general manager Scott Pioli, who had been Bill Belichick's assistant in New England, engineered the trade after the Patriots became convinced that Brady would recover fully from his knee operation.
"Since Matt arrived in Kansas City, he has embraced the team and the community," Pioli said. "His work ethic, his ability and competitive presence is what we expect from our players."

Chicago Bears (+350) - The Bears are probably a bit of an overhyped team once again this year.No, we don't think it is plausible for QB Jay Cutler to have as bad of a season as he did last year, and we do think the additions of RB Chester Taylor and DE Julius Peppers are going to help immensely, but there's still something in the water in the Windy City that we aren't so sure about. Maybe Chicago finds its way to .500... but then again, maybe it doesn't. If Favre comes back, Cutler might be the worst quarterback in this division this year.
Detroit Lions (+1500) - The Lions are probably once again going to be the whipping boys for the rest of the teams in the NFC North, but they aren't just going to roll over and die once again. There is some real talent amassing on this team offensively, as the combination of QB Matt Stafford, RB Jahvid Best, WR Calvin Johnson, and TE Brandon Pettigrew should put a bunch of points on the board if the offensive line can even remotely hold up. The questions really lie on defense, where it feels like DT Ndamukong Suh is going to be trying to stop opposing teams all by himself. This year should show some marked improvement in the Motor City.
